My brother in law claims that having a root canal isn't as painful or as traumatic as you might think. Here's hoping.

I've had a root canal - - they're really not a big deal. It is a little unnerving (pun intended) to think of what they are doing - - drilling through the top of your tooth to get the nerve out. But w/ plenty of numbing and 21st century equipment, it's really quite routine! :-)

Hey Kiddo! Sorry to hear about your tooth thingy. I've had multiple root canals and as Huff says they're not a huge deal. Generally my dentists have sent me to a specialist for them, but have also done them themselves in their office. Just had one this summer in fact. Your dentist seems to be holding you off a bit long and I'd not wait until Monday but insist that she do something sooner than that!!! Tooth pain is one of "the" worst in my opinion aside from an earache. AND you "know" about those!!! They will numb you up good and it's not as bad as it sounds! Sorry to hear about Bob as well. Hope he's in contact with his clinic as well. Pain, I think, can be managed if you keep advocating!!!

I have had 17 root canals. Dentistry has come a long way. They won't do anything unless you are totally numb, and just tell them you'd rather have too much numbing than not enough. Hang in sugar bear.

I've had root canals, too, and my dad has had a million. They're not scary these days. Mine did not hurt AT ALL, and it was so much better afterwards not to ahve tooth pain.

If you could tolerate her filing down the tooth, you should be able to breeze through a root canal. It sounds a whole lot worse than it is. Also, if you are a little edgy about it, your dentist can give you a prescription for some Valium before the appt to take the edge off. Someone will have to drive you, though. I was terrified and put off a filling for a year and a half, and I was pleasantly surprised at how gentle my dentist was. They have come a LONG way in the last 7 years. If you get severe tooth pain in the middle of the night before your appt, HCMC will give you a shot of Marcaine (it will block the pain for like 12 hours). Just a little FYI. As far as Bob, I hope they will up his pain meds if it is worse. He doesn't need to suffer. There is a pain patch called Duragesic that is really effective with pain sufferers and you wear it for up to 72 hours. I know a lot of people that it has really given HUGE relief because the medication in the patch delivers a steady amount of medication. He may still have to take a pain pill for breakthrough pain, but he wouldn't have to take them as much, and his body wouldn't have the withdrawal symptoms. Have him ask them about it. Hope this helps.
