And in an answer to a question posted in my comments earlier: Winter Carnival medallion found near Lake Phalen Associated Press Published February 5, 2004 in the Minneapolis Star Tribune
The hunt for the St. Paul Winter Carnival medallion ended early Thursday morning near Lake Phalen, on the day the 12th and final clue appeared in the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
The contest, which is run by the newspaper, will pay the winners $10,000 because they have a Winter Carnival button.
Luis Ibarra and his wife, Virginia, told WCCO-AM they had just had just arrived and kicked at the ground when they saw something shiny. It was the medallion, encased in a green doughnut.
``We just started scraping and there it was,'' Luis Ibarra said.
The newspaper confirmed on its Web site that the medallion had been found and Ibarra was the winner.
They found the medallion in an area where hundreds of people had spent the night rummaging in the snow in an effort to find it.
The Ibarras have three children and have lived in St. Paul for 15 years.
