Overnight in Duluth

So, Supe and I didn't go to a movie Saturday. Not sure why, just thought we'd save that outing for another time.

But we did go somewhere this weekend. Oh yes we did! Out of the blue, Supe announces that he needs to "get out of here." So on the spur of the moment, we jumped into the truck Sunday morning and headed to Duluth. We had a little bit of money saved and thought an overnight trip would do us good.

The drive was beautiful. The sky was blue, the sun was out and there were little white puffy clouds dotting the sky. When we got to Duluth, we went to canal park first and enjoyed the sight of the vastness that is Lake Superior. For a Sunday afternoon, there were a lot of people out and about, so we decided to find a hotel. We found an OK place up the North Shore Drive a bit. Once we checked in, we hung out in the room for a bit and enjoyed the view of the lake from our balcony.

After relaxing and meeting some of our motel neighbors, we decided to take a stroll on the lake walk. Supe got into his wheelchair and I pushed him to the trail. We didn't walk far because it was so hilly and I had a hard time holding his chair back on the declines and pushing him up the inclines. We did find a nice little bench with a beautiful view of the lake. We sat there for quite some time enjoying the view. Some not so shy woodland creatures eventually showed up to check us out and we tried to quietly creep up on them. But chickadees aren't so friendly up close and gophers prefers their holes to the laps of tourists. OH! I forgot! On the way to Duluth, we saw a mamma deer and her fawn running along the side of the road. We prayed they wouldn't run into traffic, but it was a beautiful site to see. Odd time of day for them to be out too...it was around 2 in the afternoon. Supe guessed something had spooked them to cause them to be out at that time.

Anyway, about our walk, we went to a restaurant for dinner. Sometimes I wish I could put my other stomach back in. Supe ordered his regular meal and I had a side of mashed potatoes. Of which I ate exactally 5 small bites. I am now officially a cheap date.

After dinner we headed back to the motel and got our suits on so we could soak in the hot tub for a bit. That was so nice and relaxing. After that, it was back to our room for more relaxing. We went to bed late and got up late.

This morning the weather was 180 degrees different from yesterday. It was super windy and cold. There were white caps on Lake Superior. You could see your breath when you walked outside. I dressed in jeans and wore a jacket.

We had breakfast at the free breakfast buffet and then checked out. We decided to check things out at Canal Park. The waves were so high they were crashing over the canal wall. I took some amazing photos that I will post when my site isn't so crappy.

We also drove over the lift bridge and down the lake point. The beach off Lake Point had such big waves, it looked and sounded just like the ocean. If it had been warmer, I would have sat on the beach and just soaked it all in. But it was so freezing cold!

We left Duluth around noon. It was foggy and cold and cloudy. As we drove over the hills, South to our home, the clouds lifted and the sun came out. When we stopped for gas about 40 miles later, it was still windy, but it was also hot and humid. It was said to be 90 degrees! So, off came the jackets and I changed into shorts in the gas station bathroom. We got home and it was 93 by our thermometer. We had a nice getaway, but it's so good to be back.

I lost another 8 pounds! Can't believe this! My jacket fits so much better, my shorts are loose and I find myself having to use the drawstrings for the first time since their purchase. I am able to walk further without back pain and I am still not hungry.

But the juice, water and soup is driving me crazy. It doesn't even sound good any more to me. It makes me feel as if I am sick and I feel fine. In fact, I feel great! The mashed potatoes I had last night and the yogurt I had for breakfast this morning were so yummy!

This is so interesting to me. I am feeling sad and at odds. Not because of what I can't eat, but because I can't overeat anymore. I am going to look for a therapist to delve into this further, but I am reading an amazing book that describes being fat perfectly. It's called Passing For Thin by Frances Kuffle. She was overweight her whole life before losing over 180 pounds in her early 40's. She talks about her relationship with food and her life as a fat woman. Her words are so telling and her life could be my own. And I have to admit...I miss overeating. I do. I miss ordering pizza and eating half to most of it. I miss Chinese chicken and cashews with an eggroll, cream cheese puffs, and potstickers. I miss footlong Subway sandwhiches. I miss Whoppers with cheese and warm chocolate chip cookies. I miss footlong hotdogs, or corndogs with catsup. I miss chicken chimichangas with beans and rice and a side of nachos. I miss having food at my disposal, no matter the problem. Food was such a comforting and available friend. No wonder I couldn't lose weight myself. It would be like telling my best friend to pack it up and move it out. I could do it for a time...like taking a break. But never make a lifestyle out of it...until now. Now I have to learn to live without my best friend. Not an easy task, I am sure.

On a totally unrelated note, have you seen the new George Michael video? I'm not sure what the name of the song is, but it's a bunch of people watching his video on a holographic type thing. Can I ask you something? How can this man look exactally the same today as he looked in 1986? That was 18 years ago! He has not aged a day! I think he is some kind of weird alien being. Either that or he found the fountain of youth in that central park restroom. No idea, but it's kind of creepy. And how is it that someone having a kid the year I graduated from high school now has a high school graduate of their own? It doesn't seem possible. Time! Stop passing so dang quickly!
