I remember the opportunity to purchase a sweatshirt with the school logo/mascot on it and also getting to purchase a homecoming mum. Belonging to "pep club" and making pom poms!! Nothing though that singled anyone out so they felt "out of it" as you described. Can't imagine why the school officials would allow that?!? Good to hear your move went well!
